Social Studies: We learned about Lowell's history this week. We learned that Melvin Halsted was the founder of Lowell. We also know about some interesting events that have occurred. Ask your child about it! Maybe you can get a little historical tour of Lowell!
Math: All of the math clubs started our chapter on money this week. This is an important life skill that is easy to practice at home. First, have your kiddo count a collection of coins. Next, have your child use coins to show a certain amount. Perhaps, your child could show the amount in more than one way. Social Studies: We learned about Lowell's history this week. Testing: We were very busy testing this week. First, we took our third quarter language arts and and math quarterly tests. We also took the Cogat test at the end of the week. This is the only standardized test we will take in second grade. We will finish it up next week.

Well, we started designing and building some traps to catch our little friend. The kids worked together on some very clever ideas! Some groups are using trip lines so the leprechaun will be trapped under the box. Others are luring the little green guy with Lucky Charms and fake gold! Still others are planning on catching him by getting him stuck in sticky tape! Wish us luck! We're hoping we have caught him and can get his gold on Monday morning! Perhaps we can all take a vacation to Ireland with our new riches!!! We've been learning a lot about money lately with our math chapter. The kids are very interested in how money is made. Here's a quick video to check out! It takes one person to spend money, but many people to create money. These are the people from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, also known as the Money Factory. I have learned how to make QR codes! The kids are now able to scan the QR code with their IPads and it will directly take them to a few sites that I have chosen. So far, we have a QR code to learn about our betta fish and a QR code about leprechauns. Very fun and super easy!! I am looking forward to using QR codes in all sorts of ways in the future.
Have you heard about the mysterious door that has shown up in our classroom at the base of our tree? The kids have inferred that a leprechaun may be moving in. I sure hope not! I have had some experience with theses little guys and they tend to cause some trouble on St. Patrick's Day! I guess we will just have to see if he decides to stay or if he will move on. The kids are already planning on building traps to catch him! Be on the look out for some information coming home about our leprechaun trap building. It should be an interesting week in Room 6!! Reading: We spent some time this week practicing our reader's theater plays. The kids were split into four groups and worked on reading fluently and with expression. Each play was a fable, fairy tale, or folktale. Some of the groups even worked out actions! Lots of fun! Math: All of our math clubs finished up our subtraction unit. We're moving on to money next week. It would be very helpful to work on identifying coins and their values as well as counting collections of coins at home. Social Studies: We are learning about the past. The time line project came home and is due next Friday, March 14th. Please let me know if you have any questions about it. We are going to dive into Lowell's history next week. Fun Fair BasketThe Lake Prairie Fun Fair is next Friday!! This is our last chance to send in any restaurant gift cards for our basket. You can send in any restaurant card of any value. If you'd like to send in money, I can pick up a gift card to add to it too. If you are planning on donating to our "Let's Eat" basket, please have them in by Tuesday of next week. Thanks to all those parents who have already sent in some cards. You are fantastic!!!
