Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! My new adventure is teaching a 2nd/3rd grade split classroom. We're a week in and I have to say that I love it!! The kids are just awesome. They are as sweet as can be and have been very patient with me as I figure things out. It was a fun and successful first week! Here's a rundown on what we've been up to.
The First Day
What a day! My new kiddos came in and we got to work right away meeting each other and getting familiar with the classroom. Here's a few pics of our People Hunt activity as well as the Classroom Scavenger Hunt. The day was over in a flash and I'm sure we were all tired. (Well, I know I was!)
Procedures, procedures, procedures
I am implementing a reading workshop, math workshop, and writing workshop this year. We have been spending a lot of time learning what parts each workshop is made of, the expectations of each, and even practicing them.
In reading, the kids have already reached their goal of reading independently for 25 minutes! Oh Yeah! We will be up to an hour before too long. We will be building our reading stamina as the weeks go by.
We will have math stations in math workshop. The class has had a lot of fun working in our practice stations this week. I even ventured into putting Play Doh into a station for a few days! The kids did an excellent job picking up the procedures. (and the Play Doh) :)
Each child has a Writer's Notebook. They had a few opportunities to write some stories of their choice in those. I think I'm going to have a great group of writers this year!
